Evil Mac!

I've just come to the conclusion that Mac & Cheese is nothing but pure evil!

I gave in and let Kacey have mac & cheese for dinner. She wasn't too hungry and thats what she asked for. I dosed her according to the box.

One hour later...
We're sitting on the floor playing with her pump and reading more in the manual and she says "Mom, I wonder if the glucose machine will talk to the pump with no insulin? Can we try it?" I'm just as curious so I agree to let her do it. She was so excited because with the Cozmo pump, her glucose machine is hooked to the pump (one of the main features I loved from the moment I saw it!)

Finger stick....
Test.... First time testing using her new pump
HOLY HIGH NUMBERS!!! Noway! That CAN'T be right! So since she was bleeding good she ran and got her faithful Freestyle Lite and ....
GEEZEEEEEEE!! Wowwwwwwwww!!! She got 5 units of insulin and was THIS high! Scary!!

You got to love Mac & Cheese!!!! We had a similar problem with Tristan except that he would do the opposite.... he would drop like a rock. We finally called the company. The serving size on the box is for dry macaroni... not prepare or anything. You may want to look into a salter scale. It's very useful, we love ours. Since having it, no more problems with Mac & Cheese :)

Jill, just wanted you to know that it is not at all uncommon to get high numbers the first few weeks on the pump; it will smooth back out (well, as smooth as things ever really get)

I should have said "when she starts on the pump" your blog just reminded me to mention that to you - brain spasm :-D

Rachel~ I only gave her 1 cup cooked and thats what we got! I've never even heard of that scale but I'm gonna look it up :) Thanks!

Sheri~ LOL! Thanks for the warning!! :)

We also use the Salter scale -- it's very cool. But we don't use it for pasta or rice...for some reason, it's always off for Addy.

As a general rule, we give 15 c for 1/3 cup. We always dose 15 min ahead -- ESPECIALLY for rice, pasta, and pizza (which we usually also do a combo bolus for -- you'll get all that later!!)

Oh, and cereal does wacky things to her numbers too...

Diabetes. Blech.

Okay- bad blood sugars--but those pictures of Kacey just made me smile! Who else but a diabetic child would be grinning from ear to ear with blood dripping down their finger!! LOL :)
Hope you figure out the mac n cheese thing so that she can enjoy it without any worries!

I agree with one of the other posters that it will level out somewhat in a few weeks. Whoppers and Pizza still kill me.

One suggestion, please start taking Jill's BG samples on her arms around the elbow area. The Cozmonitor is approved for it and there is no pain or problems like typing afterward.

FYI, I've been type 1 insulin dependent since I was 4 years old. I am now very healthy at 54 so I know how much better the pump is and BG tested other than fingers is great!

Good luck to Jill!

Wendy~ I'm going to talk to Kacey's CDE about that scale and see about getting one :) We don't do those cereals anymore because Kacey says they make her "Sugar Sick" (LOL!) We still have Cheerios and they keep her pretty stable.

Amy~ LOL@ her smiling with the bloody finger...yep you said it right... "only a diabetic child!" Plus she was thrilled to finally use Herbie for something ;)

Ron~ Thanks for stopping by :) My name is Jill and I'm Mommy to Kacey who is 9yrs old and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in July 2008. I don't have diabetes, she does. She's fine with testing on her fingers and actually prefers them more than her arms. We've tried her arms and they don't bleed as easy and she was getting little bruises from squeezing so hard. As long as she's ok with poking her fingers then we'll stick with that :) She also alternates fingers enough that they don't really get sore anymore unless we're having to test more than 10 times a day. Thanks so much for the advice and welcome to my blog :) I welcome ALL ideas!

Mac & cheese.... craziness. I get more craziness out of cereal and pizza though....
