NovoLog Excitement

I'm so excited that I had to share what just happened!

Over the last few months, we've been financially having a hard time and I made the decision to go back to work at Kacey's school so I could still have the flexability to be home when she needed me but I could make some extra money so we didn't have to worry about how we were going to pay for her insulin.

Humalog= $50
Lantus= $50

And that isn't adding in pen needles, lancets and test strips. It was costing us $160 for her supplies. Diabetes is expensive! Most of you already know that but when you aren't financially prepared for your child to end up with an illness like this, it's a very hard blow!

So as I said in my previous posts, I found out NovoLog was cheaper and does the same thing and it's what Kacey was on when she was in the hospital! The nurse called in the prescription yesterday and I went to pick it up today. I knew the co-pay was going to be $30....thats a $20 savings so I was still pleased. BUT...what I didn't know was when her nurse called it in they allowed for "inject up to 100 units a day"! Do the math....

I walked out with TWO boxes of the Novolog pens. Thats 10 pens for $30 .... $3 a pen.... 300 units in each pen. WOWWWWWW! When we got the Humalog we got 5 pens for $50... $10 a pen... 300 units in each pen. Once again.... do the math!

This is WONDERFUL!!! It took a bit of the financial burden that diabetes causes off of us.

Once again... "Ask and you shall receive."

If I had not have done my "homework" with prescription co-pays and I had not have asked to have it switched then we'd still be paying $10 a pen! All you have to do is ASK!

Insulin Question?

Is there a difference in Humalog and Novolog?

When Kacey was in the hospital, she was on Novolog. The vial of insulin we were sent home with was Novolog but when we got her prescription filled, it was for Humalog (Kwik pens). When I was doing some research of pump supplies with our insurance company, I looked at the price of Humalog vs. Novolog. We pay $50 for Humalog but if she was on Novolog it would only be $15!! Thats a HUGE difference and so I was wondering why she went from Novolog to Humalog to start with? They are both fast acting insulin, so why would she be on one and then get a prescription for another? I'm going to fax a note to her CDE when I fax blood sugars on Monday and ask why but I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a difference?

Now I'm beginning to wonder about Lantus vs. Levimer?

We've been paying these high co-pays for the last 7 months and we probably could have been paying less!
