Pumping Saline- Day 2

Today has been full of challenges!

Because Kacey is pumping saline until Tuesday and we're still doing shots, it's been increasingly challenging to remember to do the shots. She's become very comfortable with Herbie and I've caught her several times just taking it out of her pack to look and talking to it. New friend? You bet! She's doing all of the dosing herself and I'm dosing her with the shot. I'm very aware of how easy our life is about to get! Dosing on the pump is so easy compared to doing injections. Whenever Kacey wants something to eat, we don't have to go through the process of digging for a calculator and pen/paper. With the press of a few buttons, it's done! We're counting days til Tuesday :)

We went shopping this morning and ended up in the sleepwear section. We walked circles until a wonderful idea popped in my head. We walked over to the ladies section of jammies. I knew what I was looking for ;) I call them "granny gowns". They are the button down gowns with one or two pockets on the front. They had some really pretty ones. I showed them to Kacey and she got so excited. She's tall enough that she can wear a ladies small gown. I showed her what I meant about bringing the tubing through the front of her gown and putting Herbie in the pocket. So I think we've solved the dilemma there!

On a side note.....TWILIGHT came out TODAY!!! I bought it :) I watched it :) and I'm still in love with Edward! Hahaha! It followed the book very well and I wasn't disappointed at all. I can't wait to see "New Moon"!

Tonight we're going to see the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) at the Coliseum and the girls are excited. They enjoyed it last year and the company Frankie works for got free tickets so we're putting them to use ;)

Thanks for the comment on my blog :D

I remember the absolute relief I felt when Brendon went on the pump. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Good luck with it!

I'm so glad that you guys are getting things figured out! Reading your blog has totally made me want to get Jada started on one as soon as possible after we've moved! I'm excited for you that life is about to get so much easier!!

Shannon~ Which pump is Brendon on?

Amy~ I wanted to rush the pump process but I'm glad they made us wait now. I remember being so upset they wouldn't let us start the process but now that I think back, I'm glad we have the "shot foundation" because if something goes wrong with the pump then we have to be able to fall back on that. I'd also encourage the saline trial. It sounds like a pain in the butt....and it is (LOL!)...but it's really gave Kacey the confidence to push those buttons without being scared to make a mistake. She's already dosing herself and she's been tumbling around all over the floor and it's like shes not even connected :) All is well so far!

I am so very impressed that you have allowed Kacey to have so much ownership of her diabetes. I think her enthusiasm is definitely related to that.
Congrats on figuring out the nightwear!

Thanks Hannah! :)

Colleen~ I know she's only 9 but she's been so responsible with her diabetes since she was diagnosed and before diagnosis she was so independent with her self care. Once she was diagnosed, the first few months she relied on us to do everything for her. It really bothered her and alot of her frustration was related to having to ask Mommy & Daddy what she could and couldn't do. I started out teaching her how to count carbs, then figure her dose and eventually she was doing her own finger sticks and shots. Being on the pump is going to give her that independence back. We've gone through the whole senerios of... don't go fast thru the screens, make sure you're adding carbs correctly, and if an alarm goes off you get an adult for help. She understands all of that and she's done extremely well with the saline. I'm so so sooooo thankful we've had this saline trial and I think every child that is starting a pump should have to go through it. It's helped us with confidence and knowing that it's ok to make a mistake because it's saline and thats why we're doing it. We've treated it like insulin though because we want her being extra careful with learning how to do it. I'm ready for Tuesday! LOL!

Hi Jill,

Just been catching up on your posts. I'm so happy for both your and Kacey. The pump does make managing diabetes a little easier! We saw a big change in our daily life when we put Tristan on it.

As for pj's, we never had an issue thankfully. Tristan likes one piece footie pj's. He just wears the pump under the pj. He never complained that the belts bothered him. You are very creative with the night gowns!!! :)

I'm excited for you guys on Tuesday. The pump is not for everyone but for us, it has been great! :)
